The Beautiful Girls
We’re Already Gone
Cornerstone
By Dave Terpeny

Australians are a wonderfully weird people. I know. My cousin married one. They seem to live in a perpetual state of Zen fearlessness, constantly side with the underdog, are rabidly egalitarian and border on socialism, at least in their drinking traditions. Add to that their love of personal insults, use of words like ‘blodger’ and their absolute disdain for “current fashions” and you have an amazingly rowdy and down to earth culture.

Keep this all in mind when I tell you that The Beautiful Girls are an Australian band.

Now, whatever that conjures up in your mind, I mention it only to stress the point that they are a fearless, socially progressive, humorous and eclectic band. In other words, they’re true bastards.

Blending elements of reggae, jazz, folk hip hop, the blues and rock, as well as a variety of decades, stylistically, they have stepped forward in 2006 and released their 4th album. Like their previous releases, it is ace with a distinct garage band vibe and an appealing presence to it. Whether on the folky Jack Johnsonesque “When I Had You With Me” or the distorted “The Biggest Lie I Ever Told” their rough sound is very full and textured. When you play the album, it sits squarely in the middle of the room, the 800 lb g-clef that no one can ignore, or wants to.

And while there, they give heaps of time to activism, love, loss and humor in their musical conversation. “…And We’ll Dance On The Ashes of What’s Left,” a Ska Clash anthem with Sublime vocals, is an apocalyptic view of the state of the world today while “Skipping Cracks” is a paean to the poor and underpaid in the world. Then again, the bouncy and infectious “Girl, Lately Things Have Been Changing” is about recommitting to a relationship and “Shot Down,” with its jazz/roots reggae fusion, is a beautifully spiritual number, a clarion call to humility and redemption.

Throughout all of this; dominating the room with their honest sound, wrapping your brain around politics, social issues, love and redemption and mixing genres with abandon, The Beautiful Girls never once get up on themselves They remain down to earth, willing to share every note and word with you. Like Jack Johnson or Bob Marley, they become your friend by the sheer virtue of your listening to them.

Just remember when they come to your town, the next ‘shout’ is yours. You owe your new mates a round.
