America's favorite Rock and Roll Family is back with their third album Born To Howl - Release Date: June 5, 2001
The Stone Coyotes are a family trio, but you won't find the Osmonds or The Partridges here. Imagine a blend of The Rolling Stones and AC/DC fronted by a woman who sings like Patsy Cline and writes like Bob Dylan.
"You can't enter lightly into an association with The Stone Coyotes. Casual music fans need not apply. If rock'n'roll is important to you, this CD will move your soul. Barbara Keith is a romantic, desperate, willful and rebellious songwriter. She is backed by the most honest rock band in the business. Anthems, ballads, and battle cries. Bass, guitar, and drums. It's as simple as that."
- The Union News
The Coyotes have a distinct aggressive style with timeless songs grounded in rock, country, punk, folk and blues. There is an unmistakable Coyote sound that is instantly recognizable. "Born to Howl" was recorded partially in their own home studio. When asked if Barbara thinks the band took on a new direction she says: " We did much more recording for this album ourselves - so it's a blend of what we did at Slaughterhouse and Red Cat Studios, where the previous two albums were recorded. I don't know yet whether there's any specific new direction - The albums are a bit like having children - Once born, they have their own identity. In retrospect, we think that "Church of the Falling Rain" was a girl and "Situation Out of Control" was a boy. We leave it to the listeners to decide what "Born to Howl" is. It's still a Coyote, that much we know."
The Stone Coyotes have quite a history. Barbara began her career at the Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village, and was soon recording for MGM/Verve, A&M and Warner Brothers Her songs have been covered by Barbara Streisand, Lowell George, Delaney and Bonnie, Tanya Tucker, The Dillards, Hank Snow and others. Her husband Doug Tibbles had been a TV writer for such shows as "The Munsters", "Bewitched", "My Three Sons", "Family Affair", "Andy Griffith", "Love American Style" and others. Unhappy with show biz in general, they gave back Barbara's major label advance and went underground. Doug took up drums and his son John took up bass at age eleven. Reclusive by choice, the band moved from L.A. to Western Massachusetts to write and woodshed. They began playing the occasional show while recording in their cellar.
When best selling author Elmore Leonard ("Get Shorty", "Jackie Brown", "Out of Sight") walked in the Troubadour in L.A. one night looking for inspiration for his sequel to "Get Shorty", he discovered The Stone Coyotes. They became the model for Chili Palmer's next adventure, "Be Cool". Leonard included some of their lyrics and dedicated the book to them. He and the band made a string of appearances together around the country. "Be Cool" is currently being developed as a major motion picture.
The Stone Coyotes have turned down several indie label and distribution offers to join the Internet revolution. Their "Church of the Falling Rain" CD was #1 in sales on Amazon's Emerging Artists charts in Rock and Alternative for 9 straight months. They remain part of Amazon's free digital download program and the title track from 2000's "Situation Out of Control" has been the #1 download for 10 straight months on Amazon's New Music Spotlight charts.
