The Stone Coyotes are a family trio. But, as one writer put it, "Don't expect lace curtains, casseroles or Partridge Family kitsch. With songwriter Barbara Keith on electric guitar and vocals, husband Doug Tibbles on drums, and stepson John Tibbles on bass, this band rocks - and they mean it."
They have a spare, aggressive style with timeless songs grounded in rock, country, punk, folk and blues. Their new album "Situation Out of Control" features their eclectic, unmistakable Coyote sound. The foot-to-the-floor, guitar riff, metal-tinged title track gives way to the melodic pop of "Lucky Day", followed by "Where the Old Oak Grows", a country murder tale kicked up a notch. "The Black Atlantic" is vintage Stone Coyotes rock. From the hip-hop-tinged "When Parliament Convenes", the hard-driving "Noah's Ark" and "I Want to Rock", through the epic ballad, "My Horse Has Wings", the piano and choir harmonies of "Highland Boy" to the howling blues of "Train to Nowhere", the band plays with the passion that has set them apart.
Barbara began her career at the Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village, and was soon recording for MGM/Verve, A&M and Warner Brothers. Her songs have been covered by Barbra Streisand, Lowell George, Delaney and Bonnie,Tanya Tucker, The Dillards, Hank Snow and others.
Her husband Doug Tibbles had been a TV writer for such shows as "The Munsters", "Bewitched", "My Three Sons", "Family Affair", "Andy Griffith", "Love American Style" and others. Unhappy with show biz in general, they gave back Barbara's major label advance and went underground. Doug took up drums and his son John took up bass at age eleven. Reclusive by choice, the band moved from L.A. to Western Massachusetts to write and woodshed. They began playing the occasional show while recording in their cellar.
When author Elmore Leonard ("Get Shorty", "Jackie Brown", "Out of Sight") walked in the Troubadour in L.A. one night looking for inspiration for his sequel to "Get Shorty", he discovered The Stone Coyotes. They became the model for Chili Palmer's next adventure, and lyrics from their album, "Church of the Falling Rain" were included in Leonard's novel, "Be Cool". He and the band appeared in various Reading and Music shows together around the country.
Championed by WXPN in Philadelphia and other college stations, the band has received heavy airplay and appeared "live" on "World Cafe" with David Dye, who picked their in-studio performance of "My Little Runaway" as one of the year's best.
The band turned down several indie label and distribution offers to join the Internet revolution, deciding to sell their CD exclusively through Amazon.com and their own site, Stonecoyotes.com. Their "Church of the Falling Rain" CD has been #1 in Sales on Amazon's Emerging Artists charts in Rock and Alternative for 9 straight months. They are also part of Amazon's free digital download program.
"Situation Out of Control" is now available - only through Amazon.com or thestonecoyotes.com.
