A stand off, staring each other down from across a local Edmonton skate
ramp. That's how it started. Twin brothers Marc and Brent Belke from Del's
Skate Team and Mr. Chi Pig for Skier's Sport Shop Skate Team. Eventually,
it was running into each other, thrashing around to bands at the local
punk shows. The formation of a band had begun. Now their devoted followers
thrash around, staring at them, together on one stage with over a thousand
explosive shows performed.
In 1984, SNFU released their ground-breaking first album ...And
No One Else Wanted To Play, an album which remains one of punk rock's
most influential records. Over the four years that followed, SNFU toured
continuously, impressing crowds across North America and Europe with
their dynamic and intense live show. In 1989, the band was voted 'Best
Live Band' by the readers of Flipside Magazine, beating out the Red
Hot Chili Peppers, Fugazi, Bad Brains and Gwar. Seven years later, the
band had matured but definitely not slowed down, as proven in a Vancouver
weekly newspaper (Georgia Strait, May 9, 1996) review of the 1996 Music
West Festival, which cited SNFU's performance as the best of the entire
showcase.
The only touring breaks that SNFU took between 1985 and 1989 were
to record and release If You Swear, You'll Catch No Fish (1986)
and Better Than A Stick In The Eye (1998). In 1991, after a brief
break and a location change from Edmonton to Vancouver, the band released
The Last Of The Big Time Suspenders (1991). SNFU set out on it's
most successful tour to that point, and caught the attention of Epitaph
Records.
1993 saw the beginning of the Epitaph era and the cementing of SNFU's
line-up with the inclusion of the powerful rhythm section of Dave Rees
(drums) and Rob Johnson (bass). Together, the quintet and Epitaph Records
released Something Green And Leafy This Way Comes (1993) and
The One Voted Most Likely To Succeed (1995) combining for sales
of over 100,000 copies.
In 1996, SNFU presented their seventh release, and third Epitaph album,
entitled FYULABA ("few-LAH-bah"). Tabloid-punk at its
best, offering a wide perspective on everything from step families (Step
Stranger): "Who the hell are you? All you do is fuck my mom
and eat her food..." to bulimia (Don't Make Me Thick): "Head
in a toilet bowl, two fingers down my throat...stop trying to make me
thick" and mad cow disease (Don't Have The Cow): "even
though I eat meat, I appreciate the irony now that cows are going mad."
Dave Ogilvie (producer; Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson)
and SNFU captured that manic live energy on FYULABA with a perfect mix
of shredding guitars, pounding drums, boiling bass lines, and (how could
we forget) those off-the-wall lyrics! All these things made this album
arguably one of the band's best ever. FYULABA became an instant classic
that has continued to find its way back to our stereos in the following
years.
"Our combined growth, song-writing, production experience and performances
made this album gel like no other album we've done. We're all very satisfied
and excited about this album." - Brent Belke
In 1998, SNFU released let's get it right the first time, recorded
live at the Starfish Room in Vancouver, on their own record label, Rake
Records.
The band is currently under new management and is working on their
ninth full-length for release in the fall of 1999.
