Dynamic, melodic, original - all these describe the sound and flavor of Rype. Formed in late-1995
by former members of Chucklehead and Chuck, Rype quickly evolved a rich and expressive sound that
floored audiences all over the Northeast. To capture this new monster for posterity (and to test the
limits of sleep-deprivation), they entered the recording studio in February of '97 with Producer Huck
Bennert (Chucklehead, Bim skala Bim), and now Shelley Court Records is proud to present Rype's
bold debut CD: Extra Virgin
Singer/songwriters Brian Gottesman (keyboards) and Dave Ross (guitar) combine forces to create
an album of unique, uncompromising music, backed by the powerful duo of bassist Edon "Funky" D and
drummer Troy Velazquez. The songs cover a wide spectrum of rock, from Brit-pop roots to funky, always
with an ear towards hummability. For a hopelessly catchy melody, check out "Bottom's Up" or "Low Down";
for musical depth, "Volcano" or "Red Rover"; for spirited, hook-soaked reclamation, "Now I Want It
Back"; and for maturity and introspection, "Walk" or "Counting Days". The word has started to spread,
and the response has been glowing: songs from Extra Virgin are in rotation at over 75
stations across the country, including CMJ station WBZC, where "Bottom's Up" climbed to #2; and
The Boston Globe recently selected Extra Virgin as one of the top local CD's of 1997.
The band especially enjoys hearing from the jaded, blasé, seen-it-all types who come up to them after
shows and say with wider eyes, "Wow, you guys are truly different...and really good!"
