PODUNK
A Pure Texas Rock Experience
Somewhere shelved between the thriving metropolis of Houston and the Gulf
of Mexico lies the sleepy city of Port Arthur, Texas (pop 58,724). This is a
town where the main occupation is refinery worker and the men and women
come home sweaty and black-faced after an eight hour shift of building
scaffolding in the smoldering Texas sun. It was in Port Arthur that three
friends from kindergarten began to hone their musical skills.
As they grew they watched their friends turn to drugs and crime to escape
the boredom and monotony of their Podunk town, but Bryan Jones (guitar),
Jason Touchette (guitar), and Paul Soroski (bass) saw a better way to
escape. They began jamming together at the tender age of 12. A few years
later, they decided to box it, put it in a nice package, and take it on the
road. You see, the word Podunk isn't just a word to these guys. It isn't
just a band, either. It's a way of life. So the boys set out for Austin in search
of that elusive plateau called "making it" with the money they had
between them...all $19.52 of it.
Upon arrival they found Dwight Baker and made him their first permanent
drummer ending the Spinal Tap Syndrome for good. Their first gig together
was a mere four days after Dwight first joined the fold...but, this
was no ordinary gig. It was a showcase for the famed SXSW Music Conference.
What followed days later was a recording contract with Core Entertainment
in Nashville as well as a phone call from renowned producer Neil Kernon(David
Bowie, Queen, Yes) requesting "the honor" of doing the next Podunk record.
The sessions that followed produced a stellar debut album, called Murlin's
Dock. It was recorded in the tiny border town of Tornillo, TX on
a 1500-acre pecan ranch that doubles as a live-in studio. Immediately
following the recording sessions, Podunk hit the road. The band started
their tour four months before Murlin's Dock even hit the shelves
and their first tour took them from the bottom of California to the
tip of Maine and everywhere in between.
It is now a year and a half later and Podunk has a second album coming
out on Austin Texas' own Matchbox Records. Their sound is a bit different
than it used to be and Throwin Bones can best be described as
a pure Texas rock album. Throwin Bones was recorded over the
course of three months in Austin at the famed Arlyn Studios.
"We set out to make a pure rock record this go round," Says singer
Jason Touchette, "Throwin Bones is our way of saying that we
worked really hard to put out a record that everyone could rock out
to." And rock you will when the band hits your town for their record
release party really soon...
