"Not since the release of Under The Table And Dreaming, Dave Matthews Band's first major label release, have I heard such beautifully crafted, meaningful lyrics combined with unique instrumentals and magnificent jams."
Stevie Wonder meets Sting and Jeff Buckley meets Blues Traveler have been used to describe The Coby Brown Group's soulful songwriting. Vocally driven, innovative arrangements draw from Latin, Country, and Motown as they cleverly fuse their capable musicianship with Coby's rich songwriting.
The New York City based quintet formed in late 1998 when singer-songwriter Coby Brown left The Berklee College of music in his hometown Boston to act
in an indie film which he looks back on with less than fond memories: "Thank God that film never saw the light of day." After his first film wrapped he realized that acting wasn't his true passion. He began to play solo gigs around New York to hone his songwriting while looking for a band. He continued to study music at The New School, where he met drummer Justin Varnes. The Coby Brown Group line-up was finalized with the addition of Justin's friends, brothers Oscar Perez on piano and organ, and Anthony Perez on bass. Aaron Maxwell, a founding member of God Street Wine and a veteran of the touring scene rounds out the group on electric guitar.
While searching for a recording studio in early 2000 , they by chance ran into engineer Jeff Juliano who was working at a studio they had dropped by to look at. Justin, (who posseses a rare talent for memorizing all liner notes) recognized his name immediately as the engineer for Ben Folds Five, The Dave Matthews Band, and Agents of Good Roots. Jeff invited them to record on his home turf in Virginia and the band made the journey south to record "Homesick" a few weeks later.
"Homesick" contains a good cross-section of the group's different
styles. Coby's versitile voice croons Country Western ballads as easily as it can lay out soul and R&B and they are all represented on the album. Three of the tracks, "My Baby", "the Distance" and "Dangerous" were licensed for the Winter Films debut feature, "Ropewalk" (and if you look quick you'll see Coby in it as well).
