    Chupacabra

In the international movement towards infusing popular music with global grooves, Chupacabra is one of the newest and most dynamic contenders on the scene. Best known for its outstanding live performances, the band forces even the stiffest of witnesses to get their groove on to its eclectic potpourri of salsa, samba, reggae, afro-pop, and 70's-era jazz-funk. Such a unique sound, rooted in the music of Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico, West Africa, Europe and the U.S.A., is the result of the collaborative efforts of Chupacabra's six members and the diversity of their musical backgrounds.

As an emerging band, Chupacabra and its signature brand of World Funk immediately caught the attention of local concertgoers. Less than one year after its inception, the band won a poll of Onion readers in Denver and was subsequently sponsored to perform at the Emerging Artists and Talent in Music Conference in Las Vegas, where one of their songs was picked up by MTV for use on "The Real World." The band also earned a Westword nomination for Denver's Best World Music Act.

Chupacabra takes it name from an elusive, mythical being from Latin-American folklore, but the band cautions others against translating it literally. Instead, Chupacabra's members say they chose the moniker in reference to the yearning of the human spirit to be connected with something greater. The band sees music becoming less of a uni-cultural entity separated by borders and language, and believes the integration of the world's sounds is as inevitable as the co-mingling of its people. In opening themselves and their sound to the influences of the world's music collectively, Chupacabra has indeed connected with a great wealth of musical power.

To date, Chupacabra has completed well-received tours of both coasts and released two EP's receiving airplay in various markets across the country. The much-anticipated May 2000 release of their first full-length album promises more danceable, inspiring grooves for music fans of all tastes everywhere.
