Neshama Carlebach is following in the tradition of soul singing and storytelling uniquely redefined by her father Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. Her talent and charisma endear her to people of all ages as she performs in cities across the United States, Canada, Europe and Israel. Neshama has the unmistakable Carlebach depth of soul and the ability to captivate.
Ani Shelach (I'm Yours) is her fifth and newest release. It features three original songs, written by Neshama and producer David Morgan, one Yiddish Traditional song "Zug Zug Zug" and eight Shlomo Classics including two never before released gems: "Pe'ero Alay" and "Ma Tovu." This record represents Neshama's first full band collaboration and each member is highlighted throughout.
"From the moment I was old enough to know I was alive, I knew I wanted to perform. I trained as a singer and actor from when I was five years old, and began singing with my father. Never in my lifetime did I imagine that I was developing the strength, knowledge and skill to follow in his light.
"I began my singing career three weeks after I lost my father, my best friend. At first I felt compelled to sing, knowing in my heart he would have wanted me to. The beginning was a time of great sorrow, as I traveled around the world singing for thousands of people, who were all unable to accept the fact that we would never again hear him sing.
In 1996 I met my producer, pianist David Morgan. He changed the way I listened to the music all around me as we began to arrange my father's songs and to collaborate on new ones. When I started to compose I discovered that by singing I was not only continuing in my father's way but was accomplishing my own life's work as well. The high moments on stage with my bandmates, my brothers David Morgan, Brian Glassman, Mat Gurman, and Greg Wall give me the deepest inspiration.
My father always said that when we sing, it's like we're praying twice. When I am on stage I experience prayer in the deepest sense. In this crazy world, sadly enough, people often are too afraid to pray. We are too terrified to open our souls to our deepest prayers. We are so broken by all we are missing but somehow we don't have the words to express it so, music says it for us. To quote my father: 'Words are finite but a song sung from the heart is infinite.'"
Ani Shelach is now available in stores nationwide. Neshama is touring in support of the new album.
